'100 Things to Do in Charlotte Before You Die,' with author Brianna Crane

Axios reporter and author Brianna Crane discusses her new book, “100 Things to Do in Charlotte Before You Die" — and what it reveals about Charlotte

This episode is sponsored by HopeWay, a nonprofit mental health organization offering life-changing treatment and education. On Wednesday, September 18, 2024, HopeWay is hosting an evening with Alexi Pappas, an acclaimed Olympian, bestselling author and filmmaker, who will share her story of mental resilience and the lessons she learned along the way. While some Charlotteans might struggle to list even 50 must-do activities in the city, Axios reporter Brianna Crane faced the opposite challenge. In her new book, “100 Things to Do in Charlotte Before You Die,” narrowing it down to just 100 was the hard part.

“I think what I realized really sets Charlotte apart — because every city has things to do and things to offer — is these small business owners are some of the kindest, most open people you will ever meet. … They want to create experiences that people crave, and once you start getting to know those people and spending time in those places and having conversations, I think you'll find this place isn’t boring at all.”

Having covered Charlotte since 2016, Crane brought her own experiences and a fresh perspective to this third edition of the popular “100 Things” national series. In this episode of The Charlotte Ledger Podcast, she shares the challenges and excitement of curating a list that captures the essence of the city, balancing beloved staples with hidden gems that even longtime residents might not know. She also discusses:

  • Her approach to creating this updated guide.

  • The perception of Charlotte as a “boring” city — and how the book showcases just the opposite.

  • Advice for newcomers to Charlotte.

  • Feedback she’s received from readers.

We hope you enjoy the conversation with Brianna Crane.
