Tony Salerno, president of Mac’s Hospitality Group, is celebrating a significant milestone in 2025: the 20th anniversary of Mac’s Speed Shop. This fixture of Charlotte’s barbecue scene has expanded to nine locations across North and South Carolina. It started as a passion project in 2005 by a group of friends who shared a love for motorcycles, beer and barbecue.
Mac’s Speed Shop was designed as a gathering place where locals could enjoy good food and live music in a laid-back atmosphere. Salerno joined the company after years of experience in restaurant management.
On this episode of The Charlotte Ledger Podcast, Ledger editor Tony Mecia talks with Salerno about how Mac’s transformed from an old automotive shop in South End to an established and growing restaurant company. They also discuss:
How Salerno got his start in restaurants at TGI Fridays as a high schooler
How Mac’s Speed Shop stands out in a growing city like Charlotte
What it’s like going up against competing restaurants in a state known for its BBQ.
The challenges the restaurant industry faces
What’s in the future for Mac’s Speed Shop
We hope you enjoy the conversation with Tony Salerno.
