Announcing the Charlotte Ledger 2021 Summer Reporting Internship
Charlotte Ledger 2021 Summer Reporting Internship
Deadline to apply: April 19, 2021
The Charlotte Ledger — one of Charlotte’s fastest-growing, most dynamic new media companies — is seeking a college student to work as a part-time reporting intern during the summer of 2021.
Internship components: The Ledger intern will generate story ideas, write stories, comb through and summarize local news articles and take photographs that will appear in our newsletter and on our website. The position is remote, and much of it can be done by phone and computer, but reporting assignments can entail traveling to different sites in the Charlotte area. The intern will be in frequent phone and email communication with Ledger editors who will provide coaching and editing.
Dates/hours: Start and end dates and weekly schedule are flexible and negotiable. We’re envisioning this as an 8-10 week commitment at some point between mid-May and August. The intern will work an estimated 15-20 hours per week for The Ledger.
What we’re looking for: Clear, concise, lively and accurate writing; a can-do attitude; the ability to work independently; and a love of local news. We’re a fast-paced news organization that values smart thinking, original and timely story ideas and an openness to improvement and innovation.
Pay: $200/week stipend. How to apply: Please provide these three things to Ledger executive editor Tony Mecia at editor@cltledger.com:
3 clips (either published work or submitted class material)
a cover letter about why you are interested in writing for The Charlotte Ledger. Applicants who qualify will complete a writing assignment as part of the application process.
What is The Charlotte Ledger?: The Charlotte Ledger is a digital publication that provides original, business-y stories and local news to Charlotte through four weekly newsletters and a website. We do actual, important news and deliver it in an interesting way. We enjoy fun stories, too, but unlike other media, we don’t rely on clicks, so you won’t be rewriting Tweets about chicken sandwiches or combing Facebook for posts about sharks or snakes in search of the next “viral” hit.
You’ll want to learn about our business model, our history and our approach to journalism before applying, at https://charlotteledger.substack.com/about. You might also want to read a recent profile of us by the Poynter Institute.
Feel free to email editor@cltledger.com with any questions.
