Innovation at the car wash: Autobell considers rolling out a self-pay system to its network of 90 stores
Charlotte-based chain Autobell Car Wash says it’s getting close to a decision on rolling out an automated system that allows customers to select their type of car cleaning using just their phones and QR codes.
The chain has been testing the idea at two of its locations, on Monroe Road and on South Tryon Street, for the last two years. Drivers can pull up, scan a QR code, select a service and pay without having to talk to a worker, though employees are available to help if needed.
The Autobell on Monroe Road is experimenting with a self-pay system that customers can use through their cell phones.
The technology represents innovation in the car wash industry and was inspired by what executives saw at quick-serve restaurants, where patrons can place food orders on kiosks, said Carl Howard, Autobell’s president and chief operating officer, in a recent interview with The Ledger.
