CMS schools will be closed Monday due to ‘continued issues’ from Friday’s storm
by Cristina Bolling
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will remain closed on Monday due to “continued issues around the district from Hurricane Helene,” district officials announced Sunday in an email to families.
Monday will be an optional teacher workday, and the closure won’t affect the rest of the 2024-2025 district calendar, the district said in the communication to families. Schools were also closed on Friday, but students were notified of that closure on Thursday in time to bring work home to complete.
Parts of Mecklenburg are still in recovery mode from the storm, including areas of Mountain Island Lake where homes were submerged and residents had to be evacuated Saturday because of rising lake levels.
More than 9,500 Duke Energy customers in Mecklenburg are still without power.
Some other local school districts are closed on Monday, including Catawba County Schools, Lincoln County Schools, Rock Hill Schools and Iredell-Statesville Schools, which will have a remote learning day.
