BREAKING: CMS cancels school for Tuesday

CMS classes canceled for Tuesday as storm system brings chance of 50 mph gusts and the threat of flooding and tornadoes

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools has canceled all classes for Tuesday, due to a powerful storm that is supposed to move through the region, bringing with it the chance of wind gusts of 50 mph or more, possible flooding and potential power outages and tornadoes.
In a message to families, CMS said there will be no remote learning, no extra-curricular activities or sports on Tuesday. In a message to families, the district said wind gusts, flooding and rain “can cause hazardous conditions for bus transportation services and lead to safety concerns for our students and families.”
Prepare for severe weather: There’s a chance of widespread power outages, according to the National Weather Service, so it’s a good idea to keep electronic devices charged and watch for fallen trees and other hazards. Also consider securing patio furniture and bringing pets inside. Stay tuned to possible weather warnings throughout the day Tuesday.
As of 4 p.m. Monday, here’s what you need to know:
◼️ Rain is expected to arrive between 2 and 4 a.m. Tuesday, with wind gusts up to 20 mph at times toward daybreak. A flood watch will be in effect starting at midnight tonight and will continue Tuesday for the entire region.
◼️ Temperatures will climb from the 40s to near 60 by midday Tuesday, and thunderstorms are expected to arrive after noon or 1 p.m. Winds will pick up to 20 to 30 mph in the afternoon, with possible gusts of 50 mph or more.
◼️ Showers should end by 7 or 8 p.m. Tuesday, and winds will continue at 20 to 30 mph with some stronger gusts.
Other cancellations: Several other school districts around the region have also canceled in-person classes for tomorrow. They include Union County Schools, Cabarrus County Schools, Mecklenburg Area Catholic Schools, Fort Mill Schools and the Clover school district.
