by Cristina Bolling
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools has canceled in-person classes for Friday because of expected heavy rains, wind and the threat of flooding and tornadoes that could affect the region as Hurricane Helene moves through.
In a message to families Thursday morning, CMS said the district will move to remote learning Friday. Teachers will send work home with students today that they can complete on Friday while school buildings are closed.
The district also canceled after-school activities including athletics for both today and Friday. Some high schools are rescheduling homecoming football games and dances that had been scheduled for this weekend.
Other school districts in the region also canceled in-person classes Friday, WFAE reported.
The forecast: As of 11 a.m. today, rain and wind were expected to pick up in intensity after 6 p.m., with the storm’s peak hitting Friday between 1 a.m. and 1 p.m. Winds could reach 60 mph or more in some areas.
That 12-hour period is when the threat of power outages, flooding and tornadoes will be at their highest, WCNC meteorologist Brad Panovich told viewers on his Facebook page Thursday morning.
There were reports of a brief tornado this morning in western Mecklenburg County near the Steele Creek area.
Prepare for severe weather: There’s a chance of widespread power outages, according to the National Weather Service, so it’s a good idea to keep electronic devices charged and watch for fallen trees and other hazards. Also consider securing patio furniture. Stay tuned to possible weather warnings throughout the day today and Friday.
