CMS schedules a ‘remote learning day’ for Friday as winter storm approaches; students will be expected to complete work independently

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools has designated Friday a “full remote learning day” with buildings closed and students working on assignments independently, due to a winter storm that is expected to bring slow, sleet and freezing rain to the area starting in the midafternoon Friday.
In a message to families posted on the district’s webpage, CMS said:
The full day of remote learning will include asynchronous instruction only, which means students will have assignments that they will take home on Thursday, January 9, that they will need to complete independently and turn in on Monday, January 13. Students will not need to log on to their devices to meet with teachers or experience live instruction on Friday.
Athletic events that were scheduled for Friday evening have been rescheduled for Thursday evening, the district said in the announcement. Athletic events originally scheduled for Saturday will be rescheduled for Monday.
What’s expected: As of midday Thursday, the precipitation is expected to start as snow sometime early to mid-afternoon Friday, then mix with and change to sleet Friday evening, and then to freezing rain. Snow totals will likely be 2 inches or less for much of the area, with most of the precipitation falling as sleet or freezing rain because of a layer of warm air overhead.
Meteorologists say this week’s cold weather has lowered ground temperatures to the mid-30s, and that means the snow is likely to start sticking on roads fairly quickly. Precipitation should end in the pre-dawn hours on Saturday.
That means roads will be slippery Saturday morning, with thawing taking place after temperatures rise above freezing by midday. Then, anything wet will freeze again Saturday night, with cold temperatures expected. Spotty black ice is a good bet for Sunday morning.
