Popular New York-based grocer to expand to Charlotte and build massive 110,000 s.f. store in Ballantyne
by Tony Mecia
Grocery chain Wegmans Food Market announced Monday that it is planning a new location in Charlotte’s Ballantyne area, the New York-based grocer’s first store in Charlotte.
The 110,000 s.f. store will be located on North Community House Road as part of Northwood Investors’ Ballantyne Reimagined development — a mix of housing and retail on the former golf course of the Ballantyne hotel.
In the last few years, some residents have been actively vocalizing support for a Wegmans store in Charlotte. Some folks, especially from the North, say that it is unsurpassed for customer service and selection. There’s even a “Bring Wegmans to Charlotte NC!” Facebook group that has 7,300 members, one of whom celebrated Monday with a post that declared, “We did it!”
The new store will be on Community House Road in the Ballantyne Reimagined development.
The Charlotte Ledger predicted in 2019 that Wegmans would open a store in Ballantyne, after Northwood designated land for an unusually large grocery store that seemed to fit Wegmans’ profile. At the time, The Ledger wrote:
I’ll stick with this prediction, Wegmans will open in Ballantyne. … When it comes to Wegmans and Charlotte, Ballantyne would be the perfect place — specifically, the site on Community House Road that developer Northwood Office is setting aside for a possible grocery store as part of the huge, 454-acre rezoning and redevelopment it has proposed.
Asked in 2019 about Wegmans heading to Ballantyne, Northwood CEO John Barton told us: “I don’t know what you mean by that. We have not identified any sort of grocer.” But now, coincidentally, Wegmans is headed to Ballantyne.
A news release Monday said it would open by the third quarter of 2026.
The news release said the store would feature…
all the traditional departments Wegmans customers have come to know and love, including an abundant produce department, a wide variety of seafood, meat, bakery, deli, and cheese options, and a large selection of wine and beer. In addition, the store will have a market café with indoor and outdoor seating for customers to enjoy Wegmans delicious restaurant foods.
Wegmans is based in Rochester, N.Y. and has 110 stores n New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Delaware and Washington, D.C.
