Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will be closed Wednesday due to expected severe storms with strong winds that are expected to move through the region.
In a message to parents Tuesday evening, CMS officials said:
A severe weather advisory has been issued for all of Mecklenburg County for heavy rain and wind gusts up to 50 MPH from 4am-7pm on Wed. March 5, 2025. Due to the severe weather advisory and out of an abundance of caution, all Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will be closed on Wed., March 5, 2025.
A line of severe storms has been moving across the south on Tuesday and is expected to arrive in Charlotte in the pre-dawn hours Wednesday, bringing heavy rain and gusty winds with the possibility of reduced visibility, flooding and tornado activity, WCNC reported.
Many CMS schools hold classes in mobile trailers, which cannot be occupied during high winds.
Duke Energy sent customers an email Tuesday warning that strong winds could lead to power outages and advised customers to register for outage alerts to stay notified of power outages and estimated restoration times.
