Exploring Charlotte's fascinating history, with John Short

John Short talks about his passion for Charlotte’s history, his podcast (which was one of the first Charlotte-based podcasts) and his involvement in the Halloween pumpkin wall in Elizabeth

John Short, who writes the occasional “Historical Heavyweights” column for The Charlotte Ledger, has a deep interest in Charlotte’s history, particularly its early pioneers. His articles provide accessible and engaging takes on Charlotte’s past, focusing on influential figures and events, like the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence, as well as the broader historical context that shaped the city.

He’s also co-host of the long-running The Charlotte Podcast, with nearly 300 episodes that include interviews with local personalities. He also organizes the Elizabeth neighborhood’s beloved pumpkin wall.

On this episode of The Charlotte Ledger Podcast, Short talks with Ledger editor Tony Mecia about what inspired The Charlotte Podcast in 2015, some of Short’s favorite pieces of Charlotte history and his involvement in local events like the Halloween pumpkin wall. They also discuss:

  • Short’s take on Charlotte as a community and its development.

  • How he first became interested in Charlotte's history.

  • His favorite Charlotte historical figures.

  • His take on whether the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence is real — and if it really matters.

  • If he could have dinner with any three Charlotte historical figures, who would they be, and where would they eat.

We hope you enjoy the conversation with John Short.
