Helping women achieve stable careers, with Kerry Barr O'Connor

Kerry Barr O'Connor leads Dress for Success Charlotte, which gives women the support and tools they need to help them thrive in work and in life

Kerry Barr O’Connor is executive director of Dress for Success Charlotte, which helps hundreds of women each year achieve economic independence by supporting them with everything from a work wardrobe to interview preparation, resume building and career advancement programs.

O’Connor has been in her role for 17 years, and as the nonprofit has grown, she’s seen clients’ needs change over the years and the need for services grow.

The pandemic sent fundraising for all nonprofits into a tailspin, but O’Connor and her team responded by quickly gearing up an initiative they’d been mulling for awhile — the Your Hour Her Power campaign, which asks donors to set aside one hour of their pay during the month of March to help the nonprofit achieve its mission.

In this episode of The Charlotte Ledger Podcast, O’Connor sits down with Ledger managing editor Cristina Bolling to discuss:

  • The Dress for Success mission, and the ways it aims to lift up and empower women

  • How fundraising for nonprofits changed during Covid, and how Dress for Success had to quickly bring the Your Hour Her Power idea off the back burner and into action during the pandemic

  • The kinds of needs Dress for Success Charlotte is now seeing among its clients

We hope you enjoy the conversation with Kerry Barr O’Connor.
