The Charlotte Ledger is pleased to announce this yearβs recipients ofΒ The Charlotte Ledger 40 Over 40 Awards, presented by U.S. Bank.
The awards celebrate local unsung heroes aged 40+ who are doing great things in our community.
This yearβs group was chosen by a wise and independent panel of former 40 Over 40 winners, who reviewed many impressive nominations β awe-inspiring and thought-provoking stories of innovators and problem-solvers who toil humbly to lift others up, or find gaps in systems and work to fill them.
They are making Charlotte a better place in a variety of ways, all over the city.

Rodrick Banks, Senior Community Relations Lead, Wells Fargo β Rod has contributed to massive growth and expansion in the Charlotte areaβs small business community by creating community Development and Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) compliance in the banking sector. At Wells Fargo, he manages philanthropic grant-making to local non-profit organizations, a program that has distributed millions of dollars to multiple Charlotte organizations to improve economic mobility and to address racial equity issues.
Suzanne Bereis, Senior Commercial Property Manager, Grubb Properties β With over 25 years in real estate, Suzanne holds an N.C. Brokerβs license and RPA designation and has excelled in her career by continuously learning and networking. Sheβs known for mentoring others and leading by example, building a strong reputation through lifelong learning and connection.
Gilberto Bergman, Founder and CEO, Bergman Brothers Staffing β Gilberto came to the U.S. alone at 16 to escape political persecution. Through determination and sheer force of will, he built Bergman Brothers Staffing from the ground up into a thriving business, serving clients throughout the Southeast and beyond. He is a champion for Nicaragua, encouraging all around him to visit the country he still loves.
Angela Best, Director of Corporate Social Responsibility, Community, and Education, Truliant Federal Credit Union β Angela leads Truliantβs financial education program. In one year alone, she helped deliver nearly 500 wellness activities to more than 7,500 participants, empowering Charlotteβs workforce with essential financial knowledge. Angela also serves on the N.C. Council of Economic Educationβs Region 6 Advisory Board and co-chairs Truliantβs Womenβs Business Resource Group.
Marcus Brimley, Senior Project Director, CAA ICON β Marcus is a passionate leader with a community-minded focus. Along with his demanding role that includes overseeing the multi-phase renovation project at the Spectrum Center, Marcus finds time to lead one of CAA ICONβs employee committees, Mosaic, which promotes and celebrates diversity, equity and inclusion at all levels of the company. Heβs also involved in non-profits and mentorship in the Charlotte community.
Jessica Bronzert, Founder and CEO, The Sparks Group β Jessica founded The Sparks Group, an executive coaching and leadership development firm that was named one of the 50 fastest-growing private companies in the Charlotte region. She and her team help organizations make the most of their talent. She is also actively involved in the community, being a member and/or serving on the board of various non-profits.
Darci Carter, Educational Advocate, Consultant and Owner, Marvelous Minds β Darci is a tireless advocate and trusted guide for families navigating special education and school placement. She supports children with learning differences such as ADHD, dyslexia and autism, helping them find educational environments where they can thrive. She helps families navigate through some of the most stressful decisions they face for their children with a warmth and accessibility that is unmatched.
Steven Cole, VP of Advancement, Veterans Bridge Home; President, Metrolina Market β Steven is a dedicated leader, veteran and advocate for Charlotteβs community. A Charlotte native, he returned home after a 20-year United States Army career, which included leadership roles around the world. As VP of Advancement at Veterans Bridge Home and The Metrolina Market President, Coleβs leadership continues to have a profound impact on the community. Through his work with veterans, youth development and community organizations, he exemplifies service and dedication to making Charlotte a better place for future generations.
Johnny Conklin, Founder and Managing Partner, 16 South Capital Partners β Johnny is a passionate leader dedicated to fostering growth and opportunity for young professionals. He is a leader in M&A and principal investing. He credits his success to team-based leadership and values people as much as performance.
Whitney DβAllaird, Founder and Executive Director, For Students β After losing her son Tyler to suicide, Whitney bravely transformed her personal pain into a passion to support the emotional well-being of youth and ensure no one else endures the agony of losing someone to suicide. She founded For Students, a non-profit bringing social and emotional skills to high schoolers to help them be prepared to navigate the inevitable struggles in life successfully. For Students is in 14 local schools and will serve more than 1,000 students this school year.
Samantha DeLoache, MD, Pharmacy Manager and Entrepreneur, Kintegra Health Pharmacy β Dr. DeLoache is a pharmacist, a healthcare leader, community advocate and entrepreneurial visionary. She has made significant strides in patient care, improving access to medications, and empowering underserved communities through her work. Dr. DeLoacheβs entrepreneurial spirit, combined with her deep commitment to giving back to the community is evident in her ability to merge her passions for healthcare, education and personal growth, creating opportunities for others to thrive.
Tayuanee Dewberry, CEO, Girl Scouts Hornets Nest Council β Tayuanee is a dynamic, entrepreneurial leader and coach who develops creative strategies to motivate others to challenge the status quo and promote social justice. She has an indelible reputation for delivering inventive business strategies and community-focused solutions that increase organizational sustainability and broaden agency footprint throughout the region. She has helped more than 8,000 girls and adult volunteers experience programs building courage, confidence and character.
Lewis Donald, Owner and Smoke Tender at Sweet Lew's BBQ, Founder of the Carolina BBQ Festival β Lewis has turned his passion for barbeque into a force for good in our community. He founded the Carolina BBQ Festival and teamed up with Operation BBQ Relief to support community needs. Through his actions, heβs shown all of us how one personβs dedication to their community can inspire others to do more and give more.
Susan Evren, Executive Director, The Go Jen Go Foundation β Susanβs heart for service is immeasurable. Under Susanβs leadership, Go Jen Go expanded its impactβserving more than 400 families, granting more than $331,000 and providing free camp experiences for 18 children in 2024. Many grantees face financial hardship yet hesitate to ask for help. Susanβs compassionate approach ensures they receive support while maintaining their dignity.
Cherie Grisso, Chief Financial Officer, Aldersgate Senior Community β Cherie stepped into a chaotic financial situation and has been instrumental in restoring the organization to a sound financial footing. Her strong leadership, high ethical and moral standards and financial expertise brought stability and confidence to Aldersgate, where she now ensures operations run smoothly and finances are well-managed.
Sarah Henderson, Board Member, Next Step Clubhouse β Sarah has spent decades serving the community, especially those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. A certified childrenβs yoga instructor and longtime advocate, she brings expertise in human development and compassion to everything she does. She specializes in childrenβs yoga and yoga for special needs. Sarah brings a wealth of knowledge and care to all she does and is respected in her space in the Charlotte community.
Brooke Hodge, Executive Director, Aldersgate CCRC β As Executive Director of Aldersgate, Brooke is known for her exceptional leadership and service as well as creating a culture of transparency, inclusion and trust. She has made a lasting impact on her community, bringing integrity, dedication and heart to everything she does, while setting a high standard for excellence in senior care.
Gregory Jackson, Founder and Executive Director, Heal Charlotte β Greg is a transformative leader, a relentless advocate and a visionary changemaker whose impact on the Charlotte community is undeniable. He founded Heal Charlotte in response to the Keith Lamont Scott protests, initially focusing on youth programs in the Orchard Trace community. Beyond direct community service, Greg is also committed to bridging the gap between law enforcement and the communities they serve. He is a true catalyst for change.
Sallie Jarosz, Recently retired, First National Bank β Sallie built a remarkable 41-year career in commercial real estate and dedicated herself to mentoring young professionals, ensuring the next generation has the tools to succeed. A staunch believer in empowering women, Sallie has devoted substantial time to CREW Charlotte, where she contributes to two committees focused on recognizing women and celebrating diversity. In retirement, Sallie has even more time and energy to devote to even more causes.
Nikki Jarrell, Tax Managing Director, KPMG LLP β Nikki embodies servant leadership. She has been a driving force in Womenβs Impact Fundβs growth and impact, rising through key leadership roles to Board Chair. Nikki has spearheaded transformative initiatives, raised staggering funds, promoted inclusivity, created streamlined processes and more to support WIF and its impact. Charlotteβs philanthropic landscape β and womenβs leadership in it β is stronger because of her vision and dedication.
Sharon Jones, Founder and CEO, Dottie Rose Foundation β Dr. Sharon Jones founded the Dottie Rose Foundation to help young women find their place in STEM-related majors and careers. Through innovative and experiential summer camps and programming, the Dottie Rose Foundation is fostering a sense of confidence and pride in these young women to go after historically male-oriented positions in fields like engineering, computer science, etc.
Carlos & Nathalie Jorge, Co-Founders, Companion Health, PLLC β As Chief Medical Officer, Carlosβ approach to care combines cutting-edge research with compassionate care. He values quality over quantity and has a deep sense of responsibility for his patients. As CEO of Companion Health, Nathalie has revolutionized healthcare delivery through innovative leadership and technology. She is steadfast in her mission for prioritizing client care and refusing to fit within with the predefined rules of traditional healthcare. Together, they have created a healthcare opportunity that our broken healthcare system desperately needs.
Kristen Lieber, Author and Owner, Bark and Books, LLC β Kristen has fostered more than 200 rescue dogs and passionately educates others on spaying, neutering and responsible care. Her lifeβs work reflects her deep love for animals and advocacy. She opened Bark and Books LLC to write childrenβs books that help children learn about responsibility and important life lessons.
Gary Little, MD, SVP, Region Chief Medical Officer, Atrium Health, part of Advocate Health β A Harvard-trained physician with an MBA from George Washington University, Dr. Little has championed initiatives that improve access and outcomes in Charlotteβs healthcare system. He serves as a thoughtful mentor and inspiring role model to many Advocate Health teammates across the organization. Dr. Little actively contributes to the community through leadership roles, such as vice chair of One Charlotte Health Alliance and Medic Mecklenburg EMS Agency.
Allison Lucas, Global Communications Director, GlobalLogic β Allison is an Emmy-winning former journalist and current Global Director of Communications at GlobalLogic. Her ability to share a story, communicate information clearly and concisely and to relate to diverse audiences is unparalleled. She serves as a board member for Baby Bundles, a local nonprofit dedicated to supporting mothers and babies who experience poverty.
Keith Luedeman, Board Chair, Innovate Charlotte β Since selling his company and re-inventing himself as a volunteer leader β youβll find you can call on Keith at any time with any kind of problem and youβll get the help and feedback that you need. Keith is Chair of Innovate Charlotte, Chair of Queens University Entrepreneur Leadership Circle, N.C. Idea Foundation Board member, Boostpad Board member and a member of the Clemson University Honors College Advisory board.
Spencer Lueders, Owner and President, State Building Services β Spencer is visionary leader, social entrepreneur and passionate advocate, and he exemplifies how one individual can ignite change. He founded 24 Foundation and has since mobilized 29,000 participants and raised over $29 million for beneficiaries diagnosed with cancer. Spencerβs ability to inspire action, build community and create lasting impact makes him a true changemaker.
Doug Madar, Founder, Carolina Crown Drum & Bugle Corps β Doug co-founded Carolina Crown in the late 1980s. Under his leadership, the drum corps evolved into a nationally ranked powerhouse, consistently placing in the top 10βand often top 5βin professional-level marching competitions.
David McGibbon, Partner, Baringa β David, formerly a Principal at EY and recipient of a Global Consulting Leader award, recently joined Baringa. He brings a passion for entrepreneurship and talent development to Charlotteβs consulting landscape, helping to build strong firms and stronger leaders. David is actively involved in the Charlotte community with a variety of non-profits and volunteering efforts.
Phillip McLamb, Co-Founder and COO, Resident Culture Brewing β Phillip has been instrumental in shaping Resident Culture Brewing into a local icon. With his wife, Amanda, heβs led the brand through growth while staying ahead of industry trends. The beer industry is ever-evolving, and with Phillip at the helm, Resident Culture continues to craft amazing liquids that bring people together.
William McNeely, Founder & CEO, Do Greater Charlotte Foundation β William overcame a life-threatening double-lung transplant and turned this personal adversity into a driving force for positive change, deepening his commitment to empowering young people through creativity, technology, and entrepreneurship. He has created opportunities for underserved youth in Charlotte, serving more than 400 youth and 3,000 adults in 2024.
Michael Orzech, COO and Co-Founder, Charlotte Area Chamber of Commerce β Michael is a visionary leader whose contributions have profoundly impacted Charlotteβs business community. Recognizing the need for revitalized small business support, Michael co-founded the Charlotte Area Chamber in 2020, creating a platform that connects, educates and empowers businesses of all sizes. Under his leadership, the Chamber has become a vital resource for Charlotte businesses.
Moira Quinn, SVP Communications, Charlotte Center City Partners β After years in TV, Moira transitioned to leading communications for CCCP, helping to enact real and needed change for the Queen City. In addition to her demanding career, she always makes time for the many causes she champions and organizations she loves.
Keith Stanley, CEO and President, University City Partners β Though new to Charlotte in 2023, Keith is already making a significant impact leading the charge for University City Partnersβ vision plan, focusing on long-term economic vitality through collaboration and community engagement. Keithβs goal is to ensure that University City works for everyone, demonstrating a clear commitment to inclusivity, collaboration and positive change.
Trish Stukbauer, Entrepreneur and Editor, Catholic News Herald β As an entrepreneur working with local veterans, small companies and non-profits and co-owner of a small kiosk bookstore at Southern Lion, Trish is also editor of the Charlotte-based Catholic News Herald. She is a single parent and caregiver to an aging parent. She works independently to support women going through crisis situations and does pro bono fundraising and communications for various nonprofits. She is also a published author.
Matt Susong, Senior Lead Program Manager, TIAA β Matt is a passionate community advocate, dedicated volunteer and natural connector. He tirelessly champions causes he believes in, always seeking new ways to make an impact. Currently, he serves on the boards of Promising Pages (previously as Board Chair) and the Harris YMCA, and previously led Guys with Ties. At work, he leads with purpose, lifting others as he rises and fostering an equitable environment for success.
Clint Watson, President & Co-Founder, Ember Group Consulting β Clint is a leader in both business and community. His strong leadership skills and commitment to ethical business practices have created a thriving consultancy. A top fundraiser for the American Heart Association, a longtime Big Brothers Big Sisters volunteer and a board member of Dress for Success Charlotte, Clint channels his dedication into making a tangible impact through health advocacy and mentorship.
Kristi Wells, CEO and Co-Founder, Safe House Project β Kristi is a compassionate and visionary leader dedicated to empowering survivors of human trafficking. Under her leadership, Safe House Project has helped more than 2,500 survivors escape their trafficking situations, providing them with safety, resources, and a fresh start. Through Safe House Projectβs healthcare training program, she has equipped 400k people to identify and respond to trafficking, ensuring more survivors are recognized and supported.
Venitra White-Dean, Executive Director, Frankie Mae Foundation β Venitra sees a need that is bigger than the one she experienced personally: people with fewer resources, more isolation, and extraordinary challenges in the very long and difficult caregiving journey for those with dementia. She creates resources and connects people in a variety of ways in order for them to receive other resources and fellowship with people in similar situations. She is a vision caster, team builder, system maker, net builder and a top-tier start-up leader.
Donja Williams, Executive Director, Freedom In Me Business Showersβ Donja founded Freedom In Me to help others embrace growth, unlock their potential and network with other entrepreneurs. Her work empowers individuals through personalized coaching, workshops and business programs that turn ideas into reality. Her unwavering commitment to empowerment and community-building continues to leave a lasting impact on those she serves.
