Promotion: The Ledger’s Lindsey Banks takes a new leadership role as our assistant editor
It’s been the season of staff announcements here at The Ledger, and today, we have one more — and it is exciting!
We’re pleased to let our readers know that Lindsey Banks, our staff reporter for the last three years, has been promoted to become The Ledger’s assistant editor! Yay, Lindsey!
Lindsey has been an important member of our team since 2022. As a reporter, she has gotten to know Charlotte through writing about a wide range of topics, from sports field shortages to Airbnb party houses to the romance novel trend to a profile of a highly regarded Nordstrom bra-fitter. Lindsey has a heart for things that are good in Charlotte, and she has profiled dozens of local charities here and the important work they are doing to uplift people in our midst.
But she really shined last fall when Hurricane Helene devastated Western North Carolina, where she grew up. After the storm hit on a Friday, she worked through the weekend to report and write a poignant and compelling article capturing the damage and uncertainty in her hometown of Swannanoa, which turned out to be the epicenter of the devastation. For the next two months, Lindsey anchored The Ledger’s coverage of the recovery in the mountains through our pop-up newsletter, Mountain Updates, and occasional larger stories. Lindsey kept the focus on the humanity of the crisis, highlighting personal stories of loss, resilience and neighborly support that might have otherwise gone untold.
Her strong work in the face of chaos — a natural disaster that wasn’t just another news story but was also intensely personal — showed exactly why community journalism matters. And it showed us that Lindsey is an outstanding journalist.
Now, Lindsey will be an even more vital part of our newsroom. While continuing to report and write, she will play an enhanced role in helping us plan and produce our newsletters. She will work closely with some of our key writers. She will continue producing our weekly podcast and will oversee our social media. Lindsey is excited about this new role, in which she will have a bigger voice in helping shape the direction of The Ledger.
If you want to drop her a line, to give her suggestions or just to say hello, she is at lindsey@cltledger.com.
➡️ We’re hiring: I should also mention that The Ledger will be hiring to fill the position of Cristina Bolling, our managing editor, whose last day was Monday. We’ll be looking for a talented and experienced journalist who can write, edit and help lead our team in producing smart and thoughtful local journalism — the kind you have come to expect from us. We will have a full job posting soon, but if you know of anyone we should be talking to, spread the word and drop me a line!
