In 2018, Dr. Dale Owen and nearly 90 physicians left Atrium Health to form Tryon Medical Partners, driven by a vision of patient-centered care without the bureaucracy of large health systems. This bold move, initiated amid legal battles and skepticism, aimed to prioritize personalized care and coordination while reducing costs.
Fast forward six years, and Tryon Medical now serves nearly 200,000 patients in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area.
In this episode of The Charlotte Ledger Podcast, Owen recounts the obstacles faced in establishing Tryon Medical “out of air” — from securing facilities and staff to building insurance partnerships. He credits the practice’s success to the commitment of physicians, creative problem-solving during the Covid pandemic and a focus on providing high-quality care at a low cost. Owen also discusses:
Why healthcare is so complicated and makes people want to pull their hair out.
The advice he would have for his younger self.
Whether Tryon has succeeded in starting a movement toward independent medical practices.
How value-based care differs from fee-based care.
Whether his views on large hospital systems have shifted after starting a private practice.
What he wants patients to know about the effect of selling a stake in Tryon’s business operations to private-equity firm TPG.
Growth plans for Tryon Medical.
We hope you enjoy the conversation with Dale Owen.
