Village Tavern closes in SouthPark
Charlotte location opened in 1989; lease was expiring and restaurant

Restaurant says in a note on its door that its lease was expiring and the space was inadequate; hopes to return to Charlotte

The longtime restaurant Village Tavern, known for its pleasant patio, has closed its location in SouthPark after 35 years.
A note posted on its entrance said that the restaurant’s lease was expiring and that owners determined that the space “could not accommodate our newest menus and design prototypes going forward long term.”
Village Tavern is a regional restaurant chain that began in Winston-Salem and opened its Charlotte location in 1989. Its website lists eight other locations primarily in the Southeast, including Raleigh, Greensboro and two in Winston-Salem. The note on the door said the restaurant hopes to return to Charlotte — “a city we love” — as soon as it can find an “appropriate space.” It also thanked employees and customers. On the Facebook group Charlotte Eats, which is devoted to longtime Charlotte restaurants, users mourned the loss of the restaurant’s crab dip. Some said the restaurant recently cut back its hours.
Village Tavern is the second longtime SouthPark restaurant to close in the last few months. Harper’s closed in July to make way for a Chase bank branch.

After 35 successful years, we have decided to close our SouthPark location. We were at the end of our lease and despite great discussions with our accommodating landlord, we ultimately determined the space could not accommodate our newest menus and design prototypes going forward long term.
We hope to return to Charlotte, a city we love, as soon as we can identify an appropriate location and space.
