Organic grocer Earth Fare is continuing to open new stores in the Charlotte area, including sites in Davidson, Fort Mill and Concord, the company tells The Ledger.
Stores in Ballantyne and SouthPark are already open. The company, based in Asheville, filed for bankruptcy protection and closed all its stores in February. But new owners bought pieces of it out of bankruptcy and have been working to reopen many of the closed stores and find spots for new ones. During the pandemic, the grocery business has been especially strong, since more people are eating at home.
Earth Fare said in February it was closing all its stores, including this one in SouthPark. But under new ownership, the company is making a comeback.
Company officials told The Ledger in September that it planned to open in Ballantyne, SouthPark, Concord and Fort Mill, in addition to a store that had already reopened in Rock Hill.
A welcome surprise for Davidson: But the Davidson location is a bit of a surprise. Earth Fare did not previously have a store in Davidson, though it did in nearby Huntersville. Company spokeswoman Betsy Bevis tells The Ledger there’s no opening date set but that it is hoping to open the Davidson, Concord and Fort Mill stores in January 2021.
The news is likely to be well-received in Davidson, a college town that seems well-suited for organic groceries.
In Davidson, the Earth Fare is taking the spot of a former Healthy Home Market store at 261 Griffith St., which is a block or two from Main Street downtown. It’s a little under a mile from the Harris Teeter up the street.
Earth Fare operates 14 stores with 8 more on the way.
