Thanks for being there. It feels like human witness and effect vs social numbers by view count. 2024's overloaded political circus took attention from all of us and I suspect you'll see the numbers grow again as we nurture our own life concerns vs who has power.
I am a paid subscriber and will continue to be. The “competition “ on Substack is increasing. The Ledger is unique to Charlotte which is important to me and other people in the area. The zip codes were interesting, I was surprised that 28277 wasn’t in the top zip codes of the readership.
Longtime-ish reader here. One thing you mention and that I notice is the editor position. It is meaningful. One thing that will prevent me from reading any article or publication is poor copy editing. I noticed the loss of editors for copy at the Charlotte Observer twenty years ago. During my professional life a single typo or verb-subject agreement problem would make me pause and the second one in the same work would send it to trash. Reread, recast, revise, review. You do it well.
Thanks for the comment! I am with you on the importance of avoiding typos, incorrect grammar, etc. We aim for perfection on that, as well as 100% factual accuracy, but the truth is we do make mistakes. We are often moving quickly and without the safety net that old-time newsrooms used to have. We try to have at least 2 sets of eyes on everything that is published, but we do make errors. I hate it when we do, especially because you can't edit an email once it is sent (unlike on a website)!
Love the Ledger and I will continue to be a paid subscriber. Thank you for all that you do, and this year I will do a better job of spreading the word about your Substack.
And please, I don’t need more Cat videos or AI generated food pictures. I am a foodie but get restaurant and food information from other sources.
I read the zip codes where The Charlotte Ledger is read more often and has more paid subscribers. I wondered about the lack of subscribers from North Charlotte, West and East, and the surrounding communities?
Don't worry — we have no plans to increase the number of cat videos or food photos.
On ZIP codes, my guess is that if other local or national media disclosed the locations of their readers/subscribers, that list would look very similar. We cover topics relevant throughout Mecklenburg County, and we would certainly like more readers in different parts of the county. (We intentionally don't cover a lot in surrounding counties.)
The best in the business!!!

Appreciate all the amazing work as well as these (now annual tradition?) look-backs. Glad to know y’all continue to grow. Happy New Year!
Your reporting is much appreciated.
Appreciate you!
thanks, Kim!
Tony, The Charlotte Ledger is the best.

We need the Ledger! Thank you!
