Working to end homelessness in Charlotte, with Joe Hamby of Roof Above

Joe Hamby, community education director at Roof Above, shares some of the challenges and successes in moving people toward permanent housing — and how he found his life's purpose in his work

Joe Hamby serves as director of community education at Roof Above, an interfaith nonprofit working to ensure everyone has a safe, affordable roof over their head.

Roof Above offers services such as street outreach, a day services center, emergency shelter and permanent supportive housing to those without a home. Roof Above also runs a program called Room In The Inn during the winter months, which partners with churches, YMCAs and colleges to provide overnight housing to those in need.

In this episode of The Charlotte Ledger Podcast, Hamby discusses:

  • The need for community and country-wide collaboration to address the issue of homelessness.

  • The challenges and complexity of his type of work.

  • How Roof Above balances immediate assistance with long-term goals.

  • Hamby’s career journey that led to his current position with Roof Above.

  • Success stories that inspire Hamby to show up everyday and give 100%.

  • How Charlotte has changed since his childhood.

  • His reflections on aging and finding purpose.

Hamby received The Ledger’s 40 Over 40 Award in 2022 when he served as the director of Front Door Services at Roof Above. For 20 years, Joe has also volunteered at juvenile detention facilities bringing hope and encouragement to those youth housed there.

This podcast episode is part of a series highlighting winners of The Ledger’s 40 Over 40 awards, which honor and celebrate often unheralded people over the age of 40 who are making impactful contributions to Charlotte. It’s hosted by Steve Dunn of Miles Mediation and Arbitration.
