Ideas for the slower week ahead…
Whether you're traveling or staying in Charlotte, we've got recommendations on podcasts, books — and a special members-only series
Coming next week in The Ledger: ‘Trials of the Century’ series

Tomorrow is Good Friday, Sunday is Easter, and next week is CMS spring break.
It might get a little quiet around here. Traffic is likely to be lighter.
Next week, instead of our regular newsletters, we are running a special series. It’s called “Trials of the Century.” We’re examining some of Charlotte’s blockbuster court trials from the last 100 years — an interesting mix of true crime and Charlotte history. We think you’ll like it.
The series’ four installments were written by former Observer columnist Mark Washburn and The Ledger’s Lindsey Banks, and they were edited by Doug Miller. Look for them Monday through Thursday at 8 a.m.
And we’re sending this special series only to our community of paying members — the folks who, through their subscriptions, allow us to exist. If you’re not a member and would like to receive the series, and full access to Ledger insights and archives, we invite you to join The Ledger as a paying member:
➡️ The series kicks off Monday, with a look at the 1926 murder trial of Nellie Freeman, 19, who was accused of all but decapitating her husband — earning her the nickname “Razor Girl.”
Our regular Ledger emails will be back in your inbox starting Monday, April 17. (Readers who receive our Fútbol Friday newsletters on Charlotte FC will continue receiving those as usual this week and next week.)
◼️ 40 Over 40 tickets: I should also put in a plug for our 40 Over 40 Awards, presented by U.S. Bank. The celebration is Thursday, April 27, at the Charlotte Museum of History. We announced the 40 incredible winners last month. Get your tickets! (Ledger members can find the $10 off discount code here.)
◼️ Upcoming members-only event: We also will let you know about an upcoming free “beers with the editors” event for paying members, since our readers helped us achieve our subscriber goal last month. Look for that in May.
📚 Book recommendations
Maybe you’re heading out of town. Maybe you’ll be here in Charlotte, with a slower pace than usual and nice weather. If you’re looking for some books to read, you might consider examining these lists we compiled in the last couple years:
🎧 How about a podcast?
If you’re going on a trip — whether you’re in the car, a plane or on the beach — sometimes it’s nice to enjoy a brain-nourishing podcast.
We have been releasing weekly episodes of The Charlotte Ledger Podcast for the last several months. They are typically under 30 minutes and feature interviews with interesting Charlotte leaders from the world of business, education or nonprofits.
In addition to appearing on our website, The Charlotte Ledger Podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and other major podcast platforms.
Our latest episode features an interview with Dave Redding, a Charlotte lawyer who co-founded the men’s workout and leadership group F3 Nation. He talks about leadership and wisdom he has gleaned over the years. It is part of an occasional podcast series we have been releasing featuring winners of our 40 Over 40 awards, with discussions led by Steve Dunn of Miles Mediation & Arbitration.
Other recent podcasts in that series include interviews with:
We also have a number of discussions on current issues, such as:
